ASCENT OF THE PINNACLE, BEACHY HEAD

On Wednesday afternoon last (says a correspondent) this climb was accomplished by Mr. E. Aleister Crowley and a friend. The route chosen was from the east side. Climbing the North Gill, led on to the ridge joining the pinnacle with the cliff. The north face was then ascended, the route lying first to the right then to the left and then to the right again. The extreme summit was then reached. It was found necessary to cut steps in the chalk with an axe in parts, and the impossibility of mounting without these is the best proof that no previous ascent has been made. The chalk everywhere is very loose and the whole climb most difficult and dangerous. Wherefore we must warn those who might care to emulate the feat.
