EXPLORING KANCHENJUNGA.
PARTY LEAVE CALCUTTA.
CALCUTTA, August 9.
Mr. Crowley and party left Ghoom yesterday to climb Kanchenjunga glacier. The route decided on is by the Singalela Spur via Toongloo, Sandakphu and Phallut to Tseram, some going to Jongri to push along the stores over the Kangla (16,313 feet) if the permission of the Nepal Durbar is granted. If not, another more difficult route will have to be taken, namely, over Guicha La (16,430 feet), across the Talung glacier, up the Jongshion glacier and on through the Zemu gap, if it can be forced. The party may have to descend on to the Zemu glacier and gradually work up to the foot of the north-eastern buttress of Kanchenjunga, which according to Mr. Freshfield does not offer unsurmountable difficulties. On the contrary it is her [sic] opinion that, given good weather and experienced mountaineers, a way can be found to the summit. The expedition have made careful preparations for a three months' stay in the mountains, over 100 coolies being taken. |
