ATTEMPT TO SCALE KANCHANJANGA.
SWISS OFFICER KILLED.
The expedition which left Darjeeling for the climbing of the Himalayas, consisting of Dr. Jacob Guillarmod [Jules Jacot Guillarmod] and Mr. Charles Seymond [Charles-Adolphe Reymond], of Neuchatel, Lieut. Alexis Pache, of Morges, and Mr. A. E. Crowley, an Irish engineer, forwarded on September 1st a despatch from the highest camp reached. It stated that Pache had been swept away by an avalanche and killed, and that insurmountable difficulties caused by the natives had compelled the expedition to retrace its steps, and that it was returning to Darjeeling, which was expected to be reached on the 20th inst. M. Pache, who was aged 31, was a lieutenant in the Swiss Cavalry, who fought among the Boers in the late Transvaal war. |
