OSCAR WILDE.
In defiance of the authority of the Prefect of the Seine, Jacob Epstein's monument to Oscar Wilde in Pere Lachaise Cemetery has been unveiled at night by Mr. Aleister Crowley, says the “Times” Paris correspondent. ‘The monument has remained hidden from public gaze since its erection on account of certain features which were considered to be objectionable.
Mr. Crowley was supported in his action taken, as he explained, in the interests of the “freedom of art,” by some twenty enthusiasts from the Latin Quarter. The authorities were taken unawares, and knew nothing of the invitations distributed on Wednesday night in the Latin Quarter to assemble at Pere Lachaise. The monument has been covered up again and a special watch is to be kept by the authorities until their demands have been carried out.
Mr. Aleister Crowley caused some little stir in London three years ago by the founding of a new religious cult, which met at Caxton Hall weekly. |
