AS IT WAS
All readers of The New Generation will be interested in a new quarterly periodical, The Countryman (Idbury, Kingham, Oxford; 2s. 6d.), the first number of which has just appeared.
We commend the very short article, “As it Was, by a Nonogenarian,” to all those who oppose the practice of birth control. Two paragraphs from this article are as follows:一
“The wretched people in the cottages reproduced themselves like rabbits. As one poor woman told me, when I grew up, and was married, ‘Our bit of love, ‘tis our only tenderness’.”
“Another woman, as she told me of an unwanted baby that her husband and she were adding to their dreary home, told me that its coming was ‘God's will.’ Outside the cottage there was a calf with five legs. I asked the woman if the five legs were ‘God's will.’ Later on I had the ghastly news that her child had been born with some Redundant member.”
These tales of the past scarcely need adornment; nor is it necessary to point their moral. We commend them, however, to those ostentatiously “good” and professionally pious people who place “God’s” will before man’s, and whose delicacy of mind finds the use of preventives “shocking.” |
