THE MID-SUSSEX TIMES Haywards Heath, Sussex, England 28 August 1928 (page 8)
“Downland.”
This monthly magazine of the Sussex Downs—the September issue is now on sale (3d.)—is as readable as ever. We like the editorial on “Courtesy.” It opens thus: “Careful observation has led us to the conclusion that the practice of courtesy is very much neglected in these days. It can scarcely be attributed to the strenuous times in which we live, as it is certainly little, if any, more trouble to exercise politeness of manner than it is to assume a brusqueness which can be nothing but objectionable. One is led to the belief that the fault commences in the home where, possibly, courtesy towards one another is little considered. To a large extent the parents are responsible for this. If courtesy were extracted from the children it would become second nature, and we would have the pleasure of experiencing an attitude of civility and respect from our offspring which is distinctly absent in the majority of homes nowadays.” Christopher J. Turle writes on “Downland Butterflies,” Professor J. Millott Severn on “Success in the Making” (a most helpful article), Victor B. Neuburg on “The Year-Noon” and Arthur Sharp on “ ‘Shadowtail’ of the Sussex Woods.” There are some nice poems and pleasing illustrations, and altogether it is a magazine of which the Editor can feel proud. |
