The Legend of Allister [sic] Crowley: a Study of the Facts. By P.R. Stephensen (The Mandrake Press; 2s 6d). John Bull said Allister Crowley was “a man we’d like to hang.” Other papers and other writers said worse. We do not envy the task that Mr. Stephenson has set himself, and so can find excuse for the indifferent case he makes. No one has ever denied that Crowley has a very big streak of genius, but he is largely himself to blame if he has allowed his somewhat twisted mentality to get him into trouble with propriety. We hardly think that Crowley himself will welcome this feeble counsel for the defence. |
