The Journal of Arnold Bennett, 1896-1910. New York: The Viking Press.

Arnold Bennett lived in the midst of a multi-sided life, of theaters, music, art, literature, famous women, noted men, customs, cities, so he has ample material for a fascinating volume of intimate experiences and contacts. This is the first book of his original journals which contained more than a million words; two other books will be published to make the work complete in three independent volumes. From 1896 until a short time before his death Arnold Bennett kept a journal of the outstanding incidents of his life. It forms a complete and vivid survey of the times in which he lived. Not only does he give a picture of himself, but he sketched realistically a large group of celebrities, including Shaw, Galsworthy, Kipling, Mary Garden, William Rothenstein, Frank Harris, H. G. Wells, Aleister Crowley and scores of other persons named and unnamed.
