CHARGED WITH “RECEIVING.”
EXPLORER DENIES STORY OF LETTERS.
Edward Alexander Crowley (58), explorer, of Upper Montagu Street, London, was remanded on bail at Marylebone Police Court yesterday charged with receiving five letters, the property of Betty Sedgwick [Betty May].
He was represented by Mr. Isidore Kerman, who said he had a complete answer to the charge.
Mr. Edward Iwi, prosecuting, said the position at the moment was this—certain documents which were the subject matter of the charge were at present in the custody of the Master of the Crown Office.
Application would have to be made in the High Court for the documents to be produced. He would, therefore, call evidence of arrest and ask for a remand for a week.
“COMPLETE ANSWER.”
Mr. Kerman, on behalf of Mr. Crowley, said: “I would like to take this early opportunity of saying that Mr. Crowley has a complete answer to this charge and I agree with the application for the remand for a week.”
The magistrate: There is another gentleman rather connected with this case?
Det.-sergt. Davidson: Yes. So far I have not been able to trace him, but I have hopes of doing so in the very near future.
The magistrate said that from the information it seemed to be a very simple case, and should not last, so far as that court was concerned, for much more than half or three-quarters of an hour. He ordered a remand until next Thursday.
Mr. Iwi: In the meantime, application will be made to the High Court for the letters. |
