Fivepenny Letters.
At Christie’s to-day a collection of nineteen letters and eight poems of Kipling’s made £1,600, although no copyright was sold with the documents. Against this, a collection of about a thousand autograph letters from such dignitaries as Cardinal Newman, John Wesley, Bishop Colenso and Henry Lyte fetched on £20—roughly fivepence a letter.
Magical writing, dealing with the black arts and similar subjects, by Aleister Crowley, made a better impression, a total of thirty items, published and unpublished, commanding £257. |
