Statement by Annie Horniman
26 May 1902.
One day at Oakley Square, S.A. [Sapere Aude—William Wynn Westcott] showed me a piece of white paper about this size. He told me that it was a rough diagram of the 5°=6° Ceremony. On it was a rough diagram of the circular altar surrounded by the three Adepts holding out their wands and cruces. There was some thickish writing on the paper too, but I did not examine the words. SA. told me then, that the Cipher when read was found to be in lines of English, French and Latin alternately. As far as I can remember from the look of the paper, the Cipher must have been one written in the ordinary Latin letters.
In connection with this, I remember that Vestigia [Vestigia Nulla Retrorsum—Moina Mathers] once told me that they (or she) had lately received the instructions as to the Inner meaning of the 5°=6° Ceremony.
S.R.M.D. [MacGregor Mathers] made a great point to me about putting the 5°=6° Obligation at the end of the book instead of in its place in the First point. He gave me to understand that he had good reasons for this, something as to having received the ceremony and Obligation from different sources or occasions.
