Correspondence from Aleister Crowley to J.F.C. Fuller

[2 June 1908]

Dear Fuller,

I do not return until these conditions are fulfilled.

1. a responsible woman to live with us to keep an eye on Rose [Rose Kelly], and save her worry over housekeeping etc.

2. An income to be fixed [Gormley promised me to take a room in the house, and share fairly in expenses. He had better do it. He's quite the most harmless lodger one could have.]

3. My affairs to be put in order. [I am seeing to this myself; the only thing is, it may take a little while, say 6 weeks from now.]

4. Baby [Lola Zaza Crowley] to live with us.

5. In case of Rose giving way, the show to be finally bust up.

I have so far had no intimation that these will  be accepted. I must have one in writing before I move. That done, Murray [Dr. W. Murray Leslie] will sign enclosed note for Mrs. Kelly [Blanche Kelly], Rose may have baby on probation until my return. The other conditions being diligently striven after in the meanwhile. There must however be no mistake as to the nurse's instructions. If R.[ose] gives way, either to drink or fits of melancholia; nurse is on her own authority, to take baby away. We can't have her murdered. If she seems to you a woman of sufficient independence to act on the smallest suspicion I can trust her.

You must please remember that the other conditions are vitally important. I am quite sure that the only chance (and a poor one) is for Rose to be freed from all worry of any kind, and kept thoroughly amused. I have written to Leslie, but he don't answer. Somebody must see him—to get him to sign authority—that somebody should ask him to write to me direct. I can't act on hearsay. Get Robert H. to take Rose out to theatres and so on. If she has a real good time she may keep straight.

I don't know how to thank you for all the trouble you're taking. If I were [illegible] I should say ———— but I'm not [illegible].

Yours

Aleister Crowley
