Correspondence from Aleister Crowley to E.M. Fittock
H.M.S. Psyche, Sydney.
[Undated: circa March 1913]
Care Frater,
In reply to your letter of the 15th Feb it is very clear what is wrong. You have mixed up your knowledge of the conditions above the Abyss with matters below the Abyss. It is quite true that Saint, Hero and Crocodile are all equally nothong in one sense, but below the Abyss where we are living it is not so. The result of this is that you seem to be in the Abyss. You can get out of this immediately by refusing to think of it, and attending to your daily duties toward the A∴A∴ and toward the Navy. Leave speculation absolutely alone and meditate if you will, but not admitting any thoughts whatever. All these statements of yours, everything is wrong, everything is right, everything is volatile, everything is fixed, are all thoughts. As you well know thoughts are lies, including this statement that all thoughts are lies.
You must find freedom from this world of contradictions, and this freedom is only to be found in duty. As you seem to be a natural [?] babe of the Abyss, the best thing will be to send you the official publication for that Grade.
Yours fraternally.
