Correspondence from Aleister Crowley to James Branch Cabell

[EXTRACT]

[17 November 1918]

Dear Mr. Cabell,

I am just off to Detroit to give three lectures on Labour, Religion, and Death, and thence by the Beard of the Prophet to a Free Country. I am trying to found an Abbey of Thelema for free men.

It is dreadful when one thinks that Shelley looked to America for freedom and that the dream has failed. Frank Harris says America was still free thirty years ago and my short visit in 1900 gave me a fine impression. Nobody can tell me exactly how the tree rotted and why. can You?
