Correspondence from Aleister Crowley to Jane Wolfe
[Undated: circa June 1922]

93.
Yours of May 23 arrived with the scenarios: alas! that one of them was not "The Hero's Bride" [Heroin].
As a matter of fact, its absence has rather helped me in one of my experiments, or even two, but it has damaged, or rather is damaging, another. My legal affairs seems quite stationary, but I hope to have everything definitely fixed by July 15 and to return to Cefalu by sea as near before or after that date as may suit the connections of the London-Lisbon and Lisbon-Palermo liners.
What worries me, really, is that you people need a change: and I don't see how you are to get it. Whatever money I can make, bar miracles, must go to the bare necessities of the Abbey [Abbey of Thelema].
I think it is quite time you went to the U.S.A. and did some work for the Law. I suggest you asking deMille for a job, and his taking your steamer ticket for you and sending you travelling money only. Of course, if I got "The Spiriteer" placed here I should suggest you taking the name-part and get you this far on your way.
Ninette [Ninette Shumway] is a more difficult proposition: it is a case of finding someone to replace her with the children while she goes off for awhile.
However, I hope it is some comfort to her to think that she is living in the town where Ulysses met the Laertrysonians!
The British authorities have not "dealt with" me in any way that I have yet noticed: on the contrary, I am dealing with some of them a trifle roughly: and it is going to be worse before it's over.
You must trace the 'bien conosciuto' letter somehow: find out at least who in N.S.Y. wrote it. It is really vital to do this, and to insist on redress in the Nathan affair. I propose, all being well, to go to U.S.A. myself in the Fall; and if something is not done before then, I shall raise Hell in Washington.
I shall send you some money as soon as I can beg, borrow, or steal a scrap. Lea [Leah Hirsig] is still in Paris, and in rather a bad way. I should be very worried if I had not too much to do. I recommend the same cure for every one.
Love to Ninette and the kids. I'm always thinking of you all, and am very keen to get back—
Love is the law, love under will.
Yours ever fraternally,
The Beast 666.
