Yours of Sunday (and the rest). Thanks for taking all that trouble. I got the balance you sent to-day: double what I expected, so I'll be able to help R. [Israel Regardie] and De M. [Maria de Miramar] when I get their address.
It is absurd to suggest R[egardie] going to U.S.A. The Gods are putting him through the necessary ordeals, and he is sticking to his guns like a little man. Observe it!
It is absurd to talk of keeping your name out of all this. Too many people know you as my backer. All they will say is "Why doesn't he come straight out and fight if he's innocent? Why does he hid behind Crowley? He has the money, and is the hidden spring of these atrocities?"
Really, you should read your Bible! "If the call the master of the house Beelzebub etc." and about 50 stories of how it doesn't do any good to sneak out of trouble. Besides, I cannot afford to associate with anyone who is ashamed to proclaim the truth from the housetops when need arises—as it has done now, thanks to your policy of [illegible].
I am very much, coughing all night; shall get out on 25th and go to hospital if not [illegible].
Meanwhile, I am using political pull. This, (like the doctor and nurse) will cost money. I can't see why you shouldn't trouble [illegible]—who seems to be at [illegible] He used to stand for freedom.
But do get this. If a man offer all the substance of his house for love, it would be utterly condemned. (You might send us 10,000 a week, and it wouldn't help you one cent.)
The Gods have picked you as a likely winner but they'll naturally make [illegible]. You are not of the tribe of Ephraim, who, armed and carrying bows turned back on the day of battle.
There's no need to expose yourself [illegible]; but you've got to be ready to forget that there is such a thing as [illegible] when the Zero hour comes. Incidentally, please don't insult me by suggesting that I am doing something wrong behind your back. Either you know me or you don't. And I know that you haven't been stealing teething-rings from babies. Though, by God, I wonder if you don't need one!
