Correspondence from Karl Germer to Gerald Yorke
[EXTRACT]
[Berlin]
[2 August 1931]
The grave economic catastrophe in Germany has aggravated everything. (I had something on collateral and have had to pay 20 per cent interest.) We just have to muddle through. Naturally this economic breakdown looks like a knockout for the exhibition, which is definitely scheduled to open on October 5 at the magnificent Porza Galleries. It was generally expected even up to a few months ago that at least some of the pictures would have a ready sale. As the Summer came, and business slackened, reports came that no picture dealer was selling any pictures. And now came the final blow and nobody can tell what the next 2 or 3 months may bring, financially, economically or politically. And everybody is apprehensive.
