Correspondence from Aleister Crowley to Karl Germer

[EXTRACT]

[2 October 1931]

The Dawn-Meditation this morning: this is the result. I think it imperative that you cable [New York] for the $1000 that you say is still available. This sum is far too small to be of use other than as cash to carry on; and carefully handled, it would take us to Dec. 31. I see only two chances of actually making money.

1. I have some fairly good connections already, in several matters; and I may find either a capitalist or a purchaser for such things as Mortaldello. The Exhibition should bring me other new people.

3. Frau Busch [Bertha Busch] has, as you know, numerous wealthy friends, who are personally interested in her welfare. But, since her husband stopped paying her alimony—it is not yet clear why—she has had to get rid of all her things little by little. E.g. she has a fur coat worth RM 2000, in pawn, for RM 200.

We need absolutely RM 600-700 to get back her valuables and mine; for until she is properly dressed she cannot approach her old friends personally, as she must do if she is to get them to help. You know well that rich people won't assist seriously with large sums if you give the impression of being down and out. So she has had to confine herself to casual talks on the phone. I hope you will go a long walk—we walked out to Nikolassee yesterday, and lunched for 66 pfennigs!—think this out carefully, and then act with the utmost promptitude.
