I woke at 3 a.m. with a violent cramp—at the same instant there flashed on me the true Key to the Yi that I had sought in vain for 30 years. Why is it cut at XXX instead of XXXII? Why does III seem such a crazy breakaway? And so on.

The answer is so simple and so Beautiful that I could almost cry! And I can demonstrate the correctness to anybody not completely a moron. But especially to a musician. The Book is a miraculous rhythm. It's really absurd that the Chinese themselves should have been baffled: probably the Examination system accounts for it. Hope you're having a great time. Excuse brevity; but thumb-joint hurts damnably.
