I pulled off the deal at Luton, but on very hard terms which allow me no personal relief whatever. So I have to write to you. The long struggle is wearing me out very fast. Even to-day's success fails to encourage me as it should. I merely feel like Nelson, with not even Hardy to kiss me.

     

The landlady is at the limit of her patience. I've told her to sell the Asthmaton: I may as well choke as starve.

     

I had a letter from James, which we ought to consider at once. Will you ring me PAD: 1580 first thing to-morrow morn.
