Correspondence from Frieda Harris to Aleister Crowley

Chipping Campden

[Undated: circa December 1939]

1. I have no private income.

2. I do not want to make money.

3. I wish to reduce my way of living, that is why I welcome no entertaining, no petrol, rationed food.

4. I wanted to give up the flat in Richmond and Morton House . . .

I do not intend to live beyond my income which Percy [Percy Harris] gives me, I cannot keep you and I cannot pay for your correspondence, private or otherwise. You may have noticed that I can't afford a typist for myself! I cannot pay your telephone bills or electric light any longer . . . I am constantly incurring debts on your behalf. The carpet and furniture after you used it has had to be cleaned. It was spotless when you took the flat . . . I think you imagine you know how to live but your whole financial position points out to me that you are not a person I wish to vindicate or be guided by. I am most grateful for your teaching in Magick but for all that, it won't alter how I wish to lead my life which is without speculation or Grand use of Powers. I do not know enough to control them. Do You?
