Correspondence from Aleister Crowley to Jane Wolfe
10 Hanover Square London W.1.
1 - 4 - '42 e.v.
Dear Jane,
Herewith (α) The Word [of the Equinox] (β) Atus VI and XXI very beautiful (γ) Furious denunciation of your OZ [Liber OZ] horror! (δ) Letter to 132 [Wilfred Talbot Smith].
Now for yours of March 9. Your par 1. is not very clear. But I hope it's all over, and that in future 132 will not do things like this. But see that OZ booklet (There was no need to illustrate it at all. Get OZ done again, all by itself, on good paper, by the best printer in L.A.)! Golly, I could weep!
Your pars. 3 and 4. So far I can see only the 'blatant Bohemian'. Can't help it! You don't say one word to make me hope she's a 'genius'. The whole atmosphere seems so vulgar.
Nice letter from 132: reply in this envelope. "Archie's fraternity"! No wonder you were puzzled. I cabled "Collecting ARCHIVES fraternity" to explain why I need extra funds badly. Especially if I am coming over, I can't leave MSS, stock, all sorts of valuable books and papers, scattered in various warehouses to get up storage charges, and "dry-rot" at ease till the Judgment Day "We must have a G.H.Q. [Grand Headquarters] of sorts in Blyghty.
Jack Parsons
sounds promising.
You're right about me in Atu XIX; not much room there. I have hopes of getting £1600 to produce the whole 78 cards and my book. But, meanwhile, one or two at a time as funds come in. I'm asking people to send $100 for a special card of their own, like towns or newspapers or cross-eyed cardsharpers do to buy a "Spitfire". You might make a special appeal, showing these 3 trumps. "Now, boys and girls, which card shall we have reproduced?" Then cable me the $100, saying which you want (I suggest "The Devil" to atone for that foul misreproduction of him, or "Art" because of the Movies, or the 2 of Cups "Love" as your Lodge is "Agape"—or even two of them!) and I'll have it or them put in hand at once. Each subscriber would get a card for himself with the name of the Lodge, as a memorial.
Nuff said!
Love to all.
Aleister.
Note on XXI, useful to point out to people as shewing the comprehensive nature of the Work. The 'skeleton building' is the plan of the chemical elements; how they jump at first 8 at a time, then 18. Read this up in J.W.N. Sullivan "Bases of Modern Science" I think it is.
P.S. I can't believe that if you or your 'radio-contact' shewed these cards to one or two of the Hollywood Studio people, there would not come instant response, and a cable to a London representative to call on me here, and see the whole 78, and develop a big idea in connection with films or ballet.
