Bright Star!

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

[illegible]! Delicious parcel!

Note: if ever again, cover the powder with Stout paper: F.[ortnum] & M.[ason] use such muck, it always bursts. Nancy has just rung up: coming to-morrow. A [illegible] substitute; but Saturday is not so far now.

Next time you’re in [illegible] St: J.B. & C. or Hamblins used to have spectacle-frames rather like enclosed sketch. Please report if you see anything really frightful; a pair might help your chess. Billy Winter always said that I beat him because my hooded glare scared him; so with this aid your moves might seem more than plausible! For myself, I want a pair for the sinister purposes of the photographer. “The Old Master”—Chinese 16th century. But the effect must be positively fearsome. My head doesn’t grow nearly fast enough. Miss [illegible] is quite a success: the queerest old bird. Toshophast; and Co-Mason, and all that. Still, she will help a lot to get the book ready. But—printer? A shock this morning: they won’t even make up my letter-cards. I’ve simply got to find some new people; and it’s the hardest job. There are so few good one, even in peace-time. I feel like buying a hand press, and doing it all myself. But I suppose it’s against the law; and anyhow I haven’t got the money. But maybe one could buy a share in some small firm. I know a very good man; did “Temperance”. But he has been going blind—and that’s years ago. [illegible ]?

It’s too hot to go walking yet; nevertheless, I feel I want to scribble this long screed to you about nothing. And then—better shut up now; it’s near 6, so I’ll post this, and stagger on. Perhaps to Tringg: they tell me there’s a marvellous tailor there. In God’s name! August is getting on. Alas!

Love is the law, love under will.

Yours always and only,

A.C.
