Correspondence from Louis Wilkinson to Menneer, Idle & Brackett
17 St. Leonard's Terrace, S.W.3.
29th December, 1947.
Dear Sirs,
E.A. Crowley, decd.
I was in conversation this morning with the Official Receiver in regard to the above estate, and he suggests that my co-Executor and myself come to see him and that we hand over to him the whole estate, taking out Letters of Administration for recent creditors if this seems to be worth while. Neither he nor I, however, wish to take any steps that might be regarded as lacking in courtesy or consideration for your Firm, and the appointment to see him will not be arranged until I hear from you.
You will have had my letter of December 17th. Lady Harris [Frieda Harris] and I had paid the bill for Whiteley's storage charges but, on hearing from the Official Receiver, the cheque by which the full payment was made was stopped by me, as this is evidently now the business of the Official Receiver and not of the Executors. We paid the cheque for the account because we wished to get the goods out of storage as soon as possible, thinking that we could recover from the estate in due course. But it now seems as though this would have been impracticable. If the Official Receiver does not consider that the goods are worth the outstanding storage charges of some £45 I assume that it will then be open to us to pay the charges and receive the goods, which are almost entirely papers and books.
I should be obliged by an early reply as to the proposed interview with the Official Receiver.
Yours faithfully,
Louis Wilkinson
