Correspondence from Marjorie Cameron to Jane Wolfe

[EXTRACT]

[5 March 1953]

[P]ain is discovery of self—which literally kills or cures. This is the poison apple of Paradise . . . [T]hat which I fear in myself is my mighty will—since I know that it will go to terrifying lengths . . . I feel that this ground is the shell thin covering over a bottomless abyss that threatens to swallow me screaming into horror—and that nothing holds me from this doom—but the sheer determination of my will. Oh Jane—I know that your love is with me—but none can help me in this hour but my guardian angel.
