Crying—trying to write B[oo]k ii [of Orpheus].
The blasted whore was lying. I am hereby entitled to one lie myself—and its going to be a good one. Twas "a protective lie". I, as a free-trader, am bound to show the futility of a protective policy. Alice [Mary Rogers] really settles to come to Japan. God grant there is a state-room!
