Aleister Crowley Diary Entry Tuesday, 2 July 1903
3.14. White triangle. 6 1/2 m[inutes] 6 B[reaks]. Disturbed by carpenter.
10.40 White triangle. 29 m[inutes] 23 B[reaks]. I define a "break" as a consciousness of the cessation of the object-consciousness i.e. for the purpose of practice. For the true "break", any thought not the object, is never presented to consciousness until recognized as such. What I really count, then, is the number of pulls on the string (to take the old calf simile) and not the number of stones thrown into the lake (to take the lake simile).
Moreover an outside thought may exist, and be recognized, yet not divert the true thought. In particular, sound impressions need not vitiate the sight-concentration. E.g. I hear a cow low; only if the image of the cow, or of some object following therefrom, be present in consciousness, and that to the exclusion of the primary, is it a break.
To determine the value of the fatigue factor, I will do a series of (a) 20 break (b) 40 break (c) 60 break . . . etc and construct a table. Two objects [triangle] and Ajna with mantra shall be taken.
