Today I am more cheerful; worked on some old pictures and started a new one, a big landscape with figures in the foreground. I note how the ego-idea was the basis of Beauty's [Ninette Shumway] insanity the other night. She would have been perfectly calm had some other person been in that imaginary danger. Hence the ego-idea is the root of insanity.
