Aleister Crowley Diary Entry Tuesday, 7 March 1922
2.10 A.M. Sleep still coy.
Assuming Fermat's Last Theorem to be true, that (nZ1) xn plus yn = zn has only one integral solution (x = 3 plus y = 4 z = 6) must be as fundamental a peculiarity of the cosmos as the unique fact that water is the sole exception to the rule of progressive contraction on withdrawal of heat. Why should water expand between 4° and 0°? To bring together these two facts and find a common explanation would be to establish a totally new principle in Nature.
2:30. Impressed upon me strongly that I must "go to Epinal" i.e. buy an ebony cane [?].
