9 A.M. Why Martyrs Act as They Do. The pain prevents them thinking of anything else. They .'. attain neighbourhood concentration, with loss of identity, sensation etc etc. This releases the rest of the machine which starts some familiar mechanical process such as singing hymns, to the surprise of the uninstructed executioners.
