Friday Oct 10.

     

500 fr[ancs] arrived by registered mail—a mandate—we were able to touch it. British M[oney] O[rder] £16 and John's cheque £17.00 have proved useless: ditto Dorranec's $100. Bank silent under repeated telegrams: utterly incomprehensible.

     

This P.M. a magical fire in the room. A strong smell—burning rags with a touch of wax—but no fire discoverable. The room was quite full of smoke. Out of windows, and in corridor, all clear. (N.B. On Thursday 9th. Astrid [Dorothy Olsen] had begun [menstruation].
