Aleister Crowley Diary Entry Sunday, 2 November 1924
die Sunday.
He [Abd-el-Aziz-ben Mohammed el-Hachemi Cherif, chef de la Kadirga] is indeed a might Marabout. We rode out on mules and found the village en grand gala. His house was hung with superb carpets in out honour, without and within. We met his brother, cousins, and college friend, and fed on some 18 dishes—hors d'oevre—leading up to a sheep roasted whole, brought in on a vast copper tray. We tore off the crackling with great joy: it was a noble bird. (I had not seen a sheep even 2/3 the size before in these parts: he explained that 'twas for our sweet sakes and apologized that the short notice had not allowed him to provide a camel. We visited the tomb of the father (and brother). He is spending fr. 60,000 on it. The cupola is some 30 m. high. Finally he rode in to El Oued with us, and shewed us his new house, adjoining the University he is now building. He insisted on sending us in food twice a day till we left: this we may do on Wednesday.
