Any despotism can be jerry-built in a few years or months: but Liberty is the work of centuries.
Despotism usually results from the crash of unstable forms of government. And instability is the result of ignorance: as, the Greek Church in Russia, $ the Roman in Italy and Spain.
Note on Lying 1. It is clearly useless to tell people what they will not believe. 2. They will never believe the truth. 3. The only way of conveying the truth is to invent a lie that will have the effect of producing right conviction.
