Mysterious and sinister letter from Carter [Lieutenant Colonel John Carter]. Answered it—badly—after 3 goes.
My poor sweet baby [Hanni Jaeger] had another melancholy fit. Brandy makes her worse. Towards 1:00 a.m. she came to herself, and explained quite a lot. I am nearly insane with loving her, and feeling powerless to help her as I want to.
