She [Hanni Jaeger] can never do a thing, or even say "I'll do it," It's always I'll smoke another cigarette, and then I'll do it."

     

She suffers from a fundamental lack of vitality—due doubtless to her original ovarian trouble—and this vitiates her whole conduct and attitude. This tacked on to her abiding horror of going insane like the bulk of her family.
