Aleister Crowley Diary Entry Monday, 28 July 1941
[I Ching hexagram] 46.
1.45 an [Air raid] alert! Heavy gunfire. I think I heard a bomb or two. All very companionable & friendly-like.
3.50 All-Clear.
Annoyed letter from C.R.C. [Charles R. Cammell]. Bill from Iona[1] [Charles Cammell's wife]. Ha Ha.
3 o’c. Michaud [Jean Michaud]. He claims to have solved the RPSTOVAL cipher. Hum! He gave me a copy of “Occult Enigmas”—but no answer to O.E. No 1. “Why did he write it?” Hard to place this man, rather like Lewis. He knows a lot, & talks good sense most of the time. Yet is mixed up with balderdash.
Dennes told me cheque from Inc. Tax was in.
1—One month earlier Charles Cammell's wife, Iona, had sent samples of her handmade tweeds to Crowley, who promptly sold them to his various acquaintances and kept the money. Iona sought remuneration, and although Crowley laughed it off at first, the matter became a bone of contention that tore a rift in his friendship with Charles Cammell. Although Cammell continued to admire Crowley’s talent as a poet, his unfriendly behavior mystified him. Standing by his wife, Cammell decided honor prohibited their friendship. They would never speak again.
