Aleister Crowley Diary Entry

Saturday, 29 August 1942

Borstal atmosphere as usual as I expected, the story that Saffron [the daughter of Deborah Hogg] kept her wireless going from 3 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Monday was plainly lying. Deborah [Hogg] constantly invents unpleasant lies, anything that seems to her likely to annoy the hearer. Then, when it proves untrue she can claim that her intervention averted the calamity. Christians are like drowning men who cling to a corpse inflated by the gasses of putrefaction.
