Dr. Jules Jacot-Guillarmod Diary Entry

Some coolies work very well. So the one in the kitchen, who left last, arrived first, others with very strong charges, also arrive in the first ones. The first twelve to arrive are given a pack of cigarettes. (following the raise).

The second stage which leads us to Tonglu is not much longer, a dozen miles at most; but doing them in the pouring rain not only lacks charm, but makes you feel a little bit sour. The coolies spread out more and more along the road, but, although quite late, they still arrived.
