Meredith Starr Diary Entry Monday, 4 July 1910
Adonai! Adonai! I swoon for the anticipation of thy presence! A halo of gold circles the face of my dreams. The heart of the rose grieves with passionate expectation. The dawn flushes the East with a glory of crimson. The world is hushed with expectation. Quivering shafts of light pierce through the dusk of memory. Shadowy remembrances quicken in the awakening soul. Familiar sounds tremble in the air, sudden dreams are unveiled.

12 A.M.
The Unknown Rose.
Dost know the Secret!—Hush, then, keep it close: The days that darken with this wine of rose Are soon forgotten; pass they not away,— Dim dreams of dawn dissolving into day?
Guard close the Secret; never give it up, And drain the wine from out the brimming cup: What matter tho' the day dreams into dusk, So but thy dreams are sweet with rose and musk.
Drifting afar on streams of limpid wine, Beneath pale stars THINE mingles into MINE So swoons the soul to silence; gold and grey Mingle in dreams beyond the brink of day.
Hushed in the hollow gleams its mystic light; The dreamer drains the draught of deep delight: Roses grow crimson with the blood that flows From out the deep heart of the Unknown Rose.
Where beats the heart that ev'er for love has bled Where are the eyes that ev'er for love have shed Such tears as dew the petals of the Rose— Rosa Ignota—is hence the red stream flows?
Essence of roses mingles with thy tears; Divine enchantments, magical sweet years, Rise from the dusk of unremembered things Where the dim Past to memory's image clings.
