Meredith Starr Diary Entry

Tuesday, 9 August 1910

3 p.m. Took 2 grains of opium; it did not have any effect on me.

7 p.m. Took i grain of Extract of Cannabis Indica—also without any result.

8.30 — 10 p.m. Sat on a bench on the Commons in front of the Sea and meditated on the Vastness and Silence of the still Night. . . . "The Power of Untamed Distance" etc. This reminds me of Poe's wonderful lines:—

"Vastness! and Age! and Memories of Eld!

Silence and Desolation! and dim Night!"

They partially describe my feelings towards Night.

Remarks.

I am not doing any breathing at present because I feel that results far more important than those at present attendant on breathing are taking place in my brain. My WILL is being augmented in every direction. It seems the centre of converging rays of power and strength. Great mental efforts no longer fatigue me. Things seem much clearer and more full of meaning.

Prof. Work.

Read the 'Pillars of the Temple' in Equinox Vol I. . . . They are wonderful. . . . also read The Chemical Account of Hashish and "The Psychology of Hashish" and John St. John. . . . I rather fancy Oliver Hadoo = OM [Crowley]!

Eat 1 banana and i pear ceremonially in the Yogi fashion Om Mane Padme Hum—it took me 17 minutes.

Read C. V in Θελγμχ.
