Crowley met Evelyn Pearl Brooksmith (née Driver) on 3 July 1933. Pearl, as she was generally known, was a 34-year-old widow of Lieutenant Commander Eldred Brooksmith, living with her son, John, at 40, Cumberland Terrace, east of Regent's Park in the London borough of Camden. Within a week Crowley had moved in and they began performing sex-magick together with the aim of producing an heir. On 1 September 1933 Crowley consecrated her as his new Scarlet Woman. They were unsuccessful, and after a while she began to get on his nerves with her constant 'visions', which she insisted on describing in great detail. Pearl left Crowley on 5 September 1936 and was for a time committed to the Grosvenor Hospital for women for alcohol dementia. Although their relationship ended in 1936, they remained good friends.
