Sadness of heart is but a yearning for

That which no longer is, but having been,

Is gone and past, vanished for evermore

Into the darkness, from this little scene,

In which our puny lives make up the part

Of one who lies beyond "The Knowable,"

Bidding us hither come, or hence depart,

According to His will inscrutable.

We dance our round of sorrow or of joy,

Like a pith ball rul'd by electric laws,

Then we depart, we, poor frail human toy,

And solve, or solve not, the great Primal Cause,

Making a little void by one soul less,

Causing, perchance, a world of loneliness.
