To Dream of Snails

Grady McMurtry

14 May 1957

How long does it take a snail to die?

Slowly, slowly, hot and holy

Scrushed in its juices

Excruciatingly

Steaming and screaming

Surreptitiously

Exploding in red pain fevered

Agony

Mangling and strangling

Silently

Almost as long as some men

To die

With a gurgling

Ay-y-y-y-lug.
