Aleister Crowley, the English mystic, often played chess with his friends in the bar—and always won! One of his opponents claimed that Crowley hypnotized him into losing.

     

Crowley and I were great friends, though he somewhat awed me. At one time he talked of backing me in a bar of my own, but nothing ever came of it.
