DEVIL'S CHIMNEY, BEACHY HEAD.
ASCENT BY MR. CROWLEY.
On Wednesday, July 4, the northern pinnacle (known as the Dent du Voleur) was climbed, it is believed for the first time, by Mr. E. A. Crowley, of the Cuchullin Club. The route taken was straight from Pisgah across Jordan and up the Few Chimney. Here the work really began. Ton after ton of rubbish had to be hacked down before even a very poor hold was obtained, but finally the east face was sufficiently cleared for the ascent to be made with great care. Time forbade an attempt on the outer pinnacle, the Dent du Voleur having occupied an hour and a half. The chalk is here inconceivably more rotten than on Etheldreda’s Pinnacle (see Gazette, April 11, 1894), and the climb is considerably more exposed. Almost absolute security is, how-ever, obtained by a judicious use of the rope. |
