THE KINCHENJUNGA EXPEDITION.
RETURN OF MR. CROWLEY.
CAUSE OF THE MISHAP.
(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT)
DARJEELING, Sept. 17.
Mr. Crowley returned to Darjeeling this afternoon, looking very weatherworn. The other members of the Kinchenjunga Expedition are still on their way back. Mr. Crowley believes that the body of Pache [Alexis Pache] has been found. It would have taken them another three weeks to climb the mountains had they proceeded. He had left the others some days before the fatal accident and as he was not present he cannot give any idea as to how it happened, but thinks it was probably one of the ordinary avalanches that came down on the party. He says nothing about the disagreement or why he severed his connection with the party.
Mr. Crowley who formed one of the Kinchenjunga expedition says Guillarmond [Jules Jacot Guillarmod], Pache and Right [Alcesti de Righi] returned to camp number four for Pache's valise. He warned them about the lateness of the hour, but they roped themselves five instead of thirty feet apart and by their weight brought down the avalanche which buried Pache and the three coolies. |
