Correspondence from Aleister Crowley to Frank Bennett
[on the stationary of The Equinox] 124 Victoria St. S.W.

Dear Sir,
I am directed by the Chancellor of the A∴A∴ to answer your letter of this morning.
You are assured of the profoundest sympathy in your endeavour to perform the Great Operation of Abramelin. It is most important not to neglect any of his warnings; for the Operation is one of great danger. In the absence of specific information as to your grade of initiation, it might be doubtful whether you possess the skill to ‘condense’ the ritual. It say ‘Without altering or omitting the least imaginable thing’. . .
As it happens—or rather, is ordered,—a ritual on Abramelin lines was Revealed by the Master in December last. It brings it down to 3 months, only the last fortnight of which needs absolute retirement: the beginning would be practicable for a man in ordinary circumstances, busy all day.
I could let you have a copy should you wish.
It seems to me that it would be very useful to you to attach yourself to the Karma of the A∴A∴ by becoming a Probationer. If you could run up to town and call on me I could arrange to receive you at once. Knowing as I so well know the terrible dangers of Abramelin, I cannot but urge you to take every possible precaution before entering on the path.
Yours fraternally
Aleister Crowley
P.S. Are you any relation of Allan Bennett afterwards Allan McGregor and now Bhikkhu Ananda Metteyya? He was my Guru for years. The “Note on Genesis” in [The Equinox, Vol. I] No. 2 is by him, and No. 3 will be full of his magical rituals. There’s a lot of Abramelin in No. 3, too.
A.C.
