My Beloved Father,
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
Your letter to hand yesterday, I was so glad to get a line from you after your long silence. Thank you for the good wishes.
I do not pretend to understand in detail the why and wherefore of the matter you mention, all that I can say is, that having learned to accept events as they come along, I shall strive to do the very best I can in this new role until things right themselves again. I have just written to Bro. Cowie [George MacNie Cowie] and shall hope for better news in reply.
I do think They might have fixed things so that we could have been together for a time, but never mind, all will be well, we must grit our teeth and hand on till a way opens up. I'm so damned young and ignorant, what's the worst of it, it's an awful struggle to keep on fighting despite circumstances, and still hold people and keep them cheerful.
Do get rid of that neuralgia and cheer up again. You little know (or perhaps you do) how much a cheerful letter from you means and how often that P.O. box is empty of late.
I am going to have another try at pulling things together here, but there are very few, that I can do much with, left in the City. Bro. Dawson [Benjamin Dawson] is reported "killed in action" but have not had any official confirmation yet, though I rather think the report is correct.
I must close now but will write again as soon as there is any news. Please drop me a line when you feel like it.
Love is the law, love under will.
Your devoted son,
