Correspondence from Leah Hirsig to Norman Mudd
[EXTRACT]
Cefalù, Sicily
23 January 1924
I was more than overjoyed to get your letter from Paris. Our $100 sent by Bill Seabrook [William Seabrook] on Saturday is very nearly gone. The rent is half paid—I'm trying to bully Carlo [Baron Carlos La Calce] into making some necessary repairs which he promises to do. But then we'll have to hand over the other 500 lire. The milkman is still a great bugbear—2000 or more [lire] we owe him. On the whole the tradespeople are extremely amiable and decent. There is no need to worry about us—we are all very happy and not starving. I have ceased to worry about anything at all. I do nothing unless I feel like it and Shummy [Ninette Shumway] and V.L. [Adam Murray] spoil me to death. Even Hansi treats me like a harmless idiot. Arturo Sabatini is our devoted slave, He does everything from holding the Baronette Isabelle [Isabella Shumway] to [sending] cables to those who need them.
