Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
Your letter of July 3 reached me yesterday. I notice that you spell Law with a small 'l'. 'Change not so much as the style of a letter'. We are very grateful for your splendid efforts in financing the Book of the Law. I think you have had already a Memorandum about the guinea edition [of The Equinox of the Gods], but I am enclosing for you a revised form. I hope that you will see your way to investing in this proposition, even at the cost of realising investments. You will notice that a charge has been made for overhead and O.T.O. which means that £200 of the total amount would be available towards the cost of my proposed visit to California. To arrange this visit properly it is necessary to find some £700 in all, as there are a good many things to square up here before sailing. We are in negotiation with several important people on this side; but we would rather keep the whole business in the family, so to speak.
I gather from 687 [Max Schneider] that the prospectuses [for The Equinox of the Gods] have already reached California. You will, of course, understand that you have already paid for 120 copies at 11 shillings so that any money accruing goes to reimburse you. I will send a copy of the prospectus for the guinea edition as soon as it comes from the printers, probably in the next few days, and you can have it reprinted there with the necessary alteration of price. I think that you should consult local publishers or booksellers before fixing the price. Dollars 7.50 or 8 seems to me about right. I should not fix a qabalistic price in odd cents; the trade do not like complicated calculations. You might, of course, find some publisher in California to handle the whole thing, which would save you endless trouble, and enable your people to devote themselves to other forms of prophecy.
I will autograph 31 copies as you suggest. I think that is quite enough, and I can always do some more if required. I am hoping to send a set of complete proofs by about August 10th.
